Halal Certification
The controversy over Halal certification of food in Australia is unimportant. The decision to certify is a commercial decision and I'm reasonably sure neither the pork farmers nor the vintners nor the beer brewers are using halal certification. Do profits from halal certification businesses go to finance international Islamic terrorism? Only if the businessmen involved are very unusual. Businessmen usually want to keep the profits for their own enjoyment. There are real concerns about Islam's influence on the future of Australia. Halal certification isn't one of them.
However one good thing has come out of the campaign. Halal certification will become a government repsonsibility putting an end to dubious private certification.
It's also positive to see a grass-roots movement, albeit one sitting on the shoulders of an attractive woman, that actually is rewarded with a government enquiry and steps
taken to end dodgy dealings.
